Abacus & Mental Math · Ages 6–13

The abacus — then the mind does the math

Children begin on a real abacus and gradually learn to picture it. Soon they're solving multi-digit problems in their head, faster than a calculator — and building focus that helps in every subject.

1 · Hands-on

Move beads to add, subtract, multiply and divide — building an intuitive feel for numbers.

2 · Visualize

The abacus moves into the imagination. Kids ‘see’ the beads and compute without touching one.

3 · Mental mastery

Pure mental calculation — quick, accurate, and remarkably confident.

The curriculum

Eight levels, one clear path

Each level builds on the last with achievable milestones. Most children advance a level every few months — always placed by ability, never by age.

L1

Foundations

Meet the abacus. Bead values, finger technique, and simple addition & subtraction to 9.

L2

Small friends

Complementary pairs (‘small friends’) for smooth carrying and borrowing within a rod.

L3

Big friends

‘Big friends’ combinations extend addition & subtraction across rods with confidence.

L4

Mixed operations

Multi-digit addition and subtraction, plus the first steps toward mental visualization.

L5

Multiplication I

Single- and double-digit multiplication on the abacus, building speed and accuracy.

L6

Division I

Division method on the abacus with remainders — and mental math for smaller sums.

L7

Advanced mental math

Larger multiplication & division performed mentally by visualizing the abacus.

L8

Mastery

Rapid multi-digit mental calculation, decimals and speed drills. Graduation & certificate.

Abacus FAQ

Parents often ask

What age should a child start abacus?

Ages 6–13 is the sweet spot, when the brain is most receptive to the visualization the abacus teaches. We assess every child and place them at the right level.

How long does each level take?

Most children complete a level every few months with 10–15 minutes of daily practice. There are 8 levels from foundations to mental-math mastery.

Do children need their own abacus?

We'll guide you on a simple, inexpensive abacus for home. Soon your child won't need it — they'll picture it in their mind.

Is it available online?

Yes. Our online classes are live and interactive with the same curriculum and teachers, across Canada. In-person and hybrid are offered from our Delta, BC centre.
