5 Vedic Math Tricks Every Parent Should Know

Learn five simple Vedic math shortcuts you can share with your child today to make multiplication and squaring faster, easier, and a lot more fun.

Vedic math turns long, tedious calculations into quick one-line steps. You don’t need to be a math whiz to enjoy these with your child — in fact, sharing a clever shortcut is a wonderful way to make math feel like a game. Here are five tricks worth knowing.

1. Multiply any number by 11

To multiply a two-digit number by 11, split the digits and add them in the middle. For 35 x 11, place 3 and 5 apart, then add 3 + 5 = 8 in between: 385. If the middle sum is 10 or more, carry the extra digit over.

2. Square any number ending in 5

Take the digit before the 5, multiply it by the next number up, and stick 25 on the end. For 45 squared: 4 x 5 = 20, then add 25 to get 2025. Children love how instant this feels.

3. Multiply numbers just below 100

For 97 x 96, note how far each is from 100 (3 and 4). Subtract crosswise: 97 - 4 = 93. Multiply the differences: 3 x 4 = 12. The answer is 9312. It feels like magic, but it’s just pattern-spotting.

4. Quick addition by rounding

To add 68 + 47, round 68 up to 70, add 47 to get 117, then subtract the 2 you borrowed: 115. This mirrors how confident mental-math students actually think.

5. Subtract from a power of 10

To find 1000 - 476, subtract each digit from 9 except the last, which comes from 10: 5, 2, 4 becomes 524. No borrowing required.

Why these matter beyond the party trick

These shortcuts do more than impress. They help children:

  • See numbers as flexible patterns rather than rigid rules
  • Build confidence through quick wins
  • Check their work using a second method

The goal isn’t to replace the arithmetic they learn in school — it’s to deepen their number sense and show them that math can be playful. Try one trick at dinner tonight and watch your child’s curiosity light up.
